Stainless steel slitting coil mechanical properties, like tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation, vary significantly by grade (e.g., 304, 316, 410) and temper (annealed, half-hard), but generally offer good strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance, with typical values for annealed 304 being around 520 MPa Tensile Strength, 205 MPa Yield Strength, and 40% Elongation, while grades like 316L offer lower yield strength for more formability, and ferritic grades (400 series) provide higher hardness. Common Grade Examples (Annealed/Soft)
  • 304 Stainless Steel:
    • Tensile Strength: ~485-520 MPa (70-75 ksi)
    • Yield Strength (0.2% offset): ~170-205 MPa (25-30 ksi)
    • Elongation: ~40% (in 50mm/2")
    • Hardness: ~70-92 HRB
  • 304L (Low Carbon):
    • Yield Strength (0.2% offset): ~170 MPa
  • 316/316L: Similar to 304 but with Molybdenum, offering better corrosion resistance; 316L is low carbon for weldability.
    • Yield Strength (316L): ~170 MPa
  • 410 Stainless Steel (Martensitic): Higher strength, magnetic, less ductile than austenitic grades.
    • Tensile Strength: ~450-510 MPa (65-74 ksi)
    • Yield Strength: ~205-290 MPa (30-42 ksi)
    • Elongation: 20-34%
  • 430 Stainless Steel (Ferritic): Good corrosion resistance, magnetic.
    • Tensile Strength: 450-600 MPa
    • Yield Strength (Proof Stress): 260 MPa (Min)
    • Elongation: 20% (Min) 
Key Mechanical Properties
  • Tensile Strength (UTS): The maximum stress a material can withstand while being stretched or pulled before breaking (Ultimate Tensile Strength).
  • Yield Strength (Proof Strength): The stress at which a material begins to deform plastically (permanently).
  • Elongation: Measures ductility, indicating how much the material can stretch before fracturing, usually as a percentage.
  • Hardness: Resistance to indentation, measured by scales like Rockwell (HRB). 
Important Considerations
  • Temper/Condition: Properties change dramatically with heat treatment (annealed, ½ hard, full hard).
  • Grade: Different grades (304, 316, 430, etc.) have different compositions affecting strength and corrosion resistance.
  • Application: Properties must match the needs of the end-use (e.g., formability for stamping, strength for structural parts).
