SS 410 is a martensitic stainless steel known for its good corrosion resistance, high strength, and hardenability. It contains 11.5-13.5% chromium and can be heat-treated (quenched and tempered) to improve its mechanical properties. Its mechanical properties, like tensile strength and hardness, can be tailored by adjusting the tempering temperature. Key Mechanical Properties:

Tensile Strength: Can range from 415 MPa (min) to 185,000 psi (670 MPa) after heat treatment. 

Yield Strength: Can range from 205 MPa (min) to 30,000 psi (207 MPa) after heat treatment. 

Elongation: Can be 22% (min) in 2 inches. 

Hardness: Can range from 89 HRB (max) to Rockwell C40 after heat treatment. 

Modulus of Elasticity: 200 GPa (approximate). 

Density: 7700 kg/m3. 

Heat Treatment:

Annealing: Heating to 1550-1650°F (843-900°C), holding, and slow furnace cooling to 1100°F (593°C), then air or oil cooling. 

Hardening: Heating to austenitizing temperature and quenching (air or oil). 

Tempering: Tempering after hardening in the range of 400-1400°F (204-760°C) for 1-4 hours to achieve desired properties. 

Corrosion Resistance:

SS 410 offers good corrosion resistance to air, water, and some chemicals.

It is resistant to nitric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, dilute acetic acid, and naptha.

Resistance to food acids is also good. 

Other Properties:

Weldability: Can be welded with proper preheating and post-weld heat treatment.

Machinability: Moderately machinable in the annealed condition.

Magnetic: SS 410 is magnetic due to its martensitic structure. 

Applications:SS 410 is used in various applications requiring a combination of corrosion resistance, high strength, and moderate heat resistance, such as: 

Bolts, screws, nuts, and valves.

Springs.

Knives and tools.
